Writing Workshops
Writing Right!

It's actually quite simple, students have not improved their writing significantly because they are not getting the genuine writing practice in order to be successful. Most writing in the classroom is "prompted" writing, teacher gives the prompt and students write to that prompt. This workshop gives a comprehensive look at the different ways writing needs to be incorporated daily in the classroom. This workshop will demonstrate specifically what assigned genre, editing practice, journal writing, response writing, and across-the-curriculum writing should look like in all classrooms. With the techniques and suggestions in this workshop, incorporation is easy. Additionally, this high-energy, hands-on workshop will provide explicit strategies that combine the traits of writing and the “process” of writing. These strategies, when incorporated consistently, produce proficient and advanced writers. Teachers will gain practical methods for using research-based, classroom-proven strategies to address student writing proficiencies aligned to the state writing standards. Teachers will walk away with concrete activities designed to improve the writing skills of all students, regardless of ability level. Participants will finally understand how to use the writing rubrics to consistently assess student writing. The supplied rubrics align with standardized writing tests so teachers have the consistent assessment tool necessary to accurately determine the instructional needs of each student. (Audience: K-12 classroom teachers, special education teachers, paraprofessional educators.)
